Home > things to do
I can’t believe I dare write this as I guess there is a chance it might still fall though, but we are actually planning on doing something this weekend!! Usually on holiday weekends we always stay home as we hate dealing with crowds, but since Paul has Thursday, Friday & Saturday off we decided that when Kevin gets out of school on Thursday we will head up north and stay at my parents trailer up in Mesick!
It’s sad to say this, but what really got us thinking of going north was because the Cherry Bowl Drive In has 2 movies (even though I know we will just do the first one) this weekend. (Shrek Forever After & then Iron Man 2) So that’s what we will end up doing on Friday night, but I’m not quite sure what we will do during the day. Parts of me is thinking that maybe it would be fun to head up to Petoskey for the day in search of the popular Petoskey stone since my kids love looking for cool rocks/stones. I would just love for this weekend to be a weekend to remember.
Here I was thinking the biggest thing we were going to do this weekend would be to go to a memorial day parade and home with some candy and maybe some of those personalized footballs or frisbees. I have a feeling the new plans sounds a lot better!
For those that don’t live in West Michigan, let me just say we are having a beautifulday today! While Kevin is all cooped up inside at school, Katie & I are taking advantage of enjoying this wonderful weather God gave us. We are able to play chalk, ride bikes, play on the swing set, play in the sand box, play tag, play Frisbee and also for me I’m able to brush my lawn to get rid of the snow mold and do a little bit of blogging. The best thing about it all is that we can do this all with out having to wear any coats! WOOHOO!!!
Then I noticed it.. my first true sign of spring. My tulips are not popping through the ground! So between the tulips, seeing some buds on the trees and seeing robins I’m just thinking…. spring just might be here!!
I just hope the weathermen are wrong and we won’t be getting snow next weekend… that will crush my spirits!
Join Texas Roadhouse in Grandville every Tuesday in February for Kids’ Night! Kids eat free* when mom or dad purchase an entree so don’t miss out. Mom and dad can enjoy a Hand-Cut Steak or our Fall-Off-The-Bone Ribs while the kids enjoy all the fun! Come on out for Legendary Food, Legendary Service and Legendary Fun for the whole family.
I can honestly say I don’t know to many kids that look forward to Monday’s, but so far (knock on wood) mine too! Reason being is in our household Monday usually will equal going to the library! That’s one time I can say let’s go and the kids rush to the car instead of taking their sweet ol’ time.
First thing Katie does when we arrive is runs to the toy area and Kevin runs to the books and starts picking out which books he would want to bring home to read. After the books are picked out we head over to the kids movies to see if there would be anything good worth watching. What’s great about our library is that movie’s are FREE! So instead of getting a blockbuster card, we just make sure we carry our library card. Yes, the selection isn’t as good as the library doesn’t have the new releases and they aren’t open as late as the video stores, but for the price difference you can’t beat it! Very rarely do we NOT find something good to bring home for Movie night.
There are so many other great things our library has for us. They not only have a bunch of computers for the adults to use, but they also have a few computers that have kid games on too for the kids to use! They have an area where you can buy used books CHEAP and also a place you could bring your old magazines like Good Housekeeping, Newsweek or even the car accessories one and you can drop yours off and take whichever one looks good to you! I love it because it’s a great place to bring your old ones that you no longer want and a great place to get one that looks good for FREE! Another wonderful thing our library does is have story time for the kids (different times for different age groups) and they also will have Movie time there as well where they will play a movie for free! Then come Christmas time they end up having a fun Lighting of the Christmas tree! The kids all wear their pj’s, Mrs. Claus is there reading them books and outside is a sleigh ride where you can take your family on.. all for FREE! (can you tell I like FREE!)
So in case you are wondering what there is to do, just check out your local library, you just might be amazed at what you could find.
Now that the colder weather is upon us, that means the fires will be lit in the fireplaces and the furnaces will be kicking back on as well. Before you push up your thermostat there are a few things you should do.
- Check your filter. If it’s dirty, replace it and head over to your calender and flip it forward 3 months and make note you will need to change it again! (Check your Sunday ads sometimes they have a buy 2 get one free on furnace filters.. since it’s something we know we will use we end up buying in advance)
- If you didn’t change your batteries in the smoke detectors & carbon monoxide detectors during the time change, then now would be the best time to change them!
- Also, run your heater for a few minutes before you actually need it. That way you know for sure it’s running good and if it’s not call someone to come out and look at it. Nothing would be worse than have it be freezing out, you go to turn in the heater to find out it’s not working. You call the heating & cooling guy to find out they are booked out for a week or so. Beat everyone else to the punch by doing it early.

Now that Fall is upon us there is even that many more things you can do outside! Right now, a bunch of the local farms start in with their corn mazes, pumpkin patches.. ect.
One of the local farms that has fun things to do for the whole family would be Moelker Farms. (they are located between Grandville & Standale) Every Saturday for the month of October (from noon to 5pm) they have horse drawn wagon rides through their apple orchard! Adults are $4.50, Kids 12 and under are $3.00, while kids under 2 are FREE! (They do have special activities for the kids to do!)
While you are there you can go out in the field and pick your own pumpkin, get some fresh apples, have doughnuts & apple cider or even a caramel apple! They also have a great farm market right there where you also could buy home made Jams (nothing like home made!) Fruit Salsa, Syrup and they even carry such things as Grassfield Natural Cheeses, Great Lakes Soaps & Laura’s Country Candles which are all made in MICHIGAN!
So if you’re sitting around the house on a Saturday this month and are wondering what to do, why not jump in the car and head to Moeker Farms and go for the horse drawn wagon ride and find that perfect pumpkin you can end up carving for Halloween! Just don’t forget to bring your camera!
Since I have a busy day today I thought I would take a few minutes now to read my emails, check the two forums I go to every day and just take a minute to myself before getting ready to clean like a mad woman. Today we are having our annual party with Paul’s friends. We started it last year and had a fish fry and bon fire and it must of been a hit as his friends kept wondering when we would be doing it again this year.
I’m not much of the entertaining type as I get nervous and stressed, but after the party last time I remember thinking we should do this more often. So I’m now thinking maybe we (I) could do something for my friends around the holidays? Instead of having the spouses too, it could just be a mom & kid thing. It just seems like the holiday season can get so stressful that maybe it would be nice to have a little get together and I could find some fun kids crafts for the kids to make that they could give as a gift to either their Dad or Grandparents (can’t say Mom as we would more than likely be having to help them).
I’m thinking that might really be a fun thing to do. Maybe I could have Kevin & Katie make up some holiday invitations and we could invite their friends over that way instead! Just to give them a taste of things we could do as they will of made the invitations.
Maybe I could even come up with some easy fun games too where the kids could win prizes?!? Heck, I should of thought of that with the party we are having tonight. Lets see.. people aren’t getting here until 4-5pm so I have a few hours to think of something… better go! I hope you have a great weekend!
A couple weeks ago I started posting things on Craigslist once again and I was shocked that just about everything I posted ended up selling! My Dad teases me because I’m suppose to have a garage sale this week and here I’m selling a lot of my big stuff before the garage sale!
My recommendation.. if you look through your house and find that you have some extra things laying around your house that you no longer use (anything baby wise, Dressers, tv stands, desks) then you should try posting them on Craigslist! I know I got better prices there than I ever would of at my garage sale! In just 2 weeks time I ended up making over $200!
